Experienced staff and a strong literacy program are the backbone of the school. From Kindergarten through Second Grade, students are provided a daily uninterrupted two-hour reading block. Classrooms and teachers dedicated to the subjects of science, music and comuters strengthen and enrich each student’s learning experience. This year, 40% of the Third Graders have qualified for Advanced Work classes next year. Affordable on-site before- and after-school programs are available. They are run by the Oak Square YMCA. The after-school program runs until 6:00 PM.
The Winship Elementary School is located within walking distance of the ‘T’. We have volunteers from Boston Partners in Education, tutors from Boston University and Temple Beth Zion, and student interns from area colleges and universities. They assist teachers and children, individually and in small groups.
We have an experienced staff and a strong literacy program. We offer an Early Childhood Special Education Program (K0/K1) and Regular Education Classes in grades K2 through 5, as well as special programs in science, music and computers.
What Kinds of Parent Support and Resources Does Our School Provide?
The Winship offers an after school program, on the premises, from 3:20 to 6:00 PM for 5 to 12 year olds. The Siblings Program (Big Brother/Big Sister) pairs Winship students with Boston University students for recreational and weekend activities throughout the year. Boston Connects' coordinator links children and families to community resources. The Early Childhood Program sponsors monthly workshops for parents. The Winship has a technology ready Parent Center. How are We Preparing Our Students for Educational Success?
Students may enter the Winship at the age of 5 and remain with us through grade 5. In the early years, Pre-K to grade 3, eligible students and others in need, receive additional help and support, individually or in small group, from reading specialists and transition services staff. Students in grades K through 5 receive homework and recreational assistance in the after school program from 3:20 to 6:00 PM. Grades K2 through 2 are provided with an uninterrupted morning literacy block. Professional Development is centered on looking at student work (LASW) to learn about strengths and weaknesses. The process helps teachers devise the best classroom methods and materials to boost teaching and learning.
A Math Leadership Team has been formed to facilitate and support the implementation school-wide of the math curriculum, Investigations. Math and literacy coaches support staff development. We offer special programs in science, music and computers in a lab with 25 iMac’s and Internet capabilities. There are other Internet capabilities throughout the building for staff, parents and administration. In addition, each classroom has 2-3 computers being utilized for daily instruction by students and teachers.
We complement our core curriculum program with the arts. We offer daily instruction in music, hire resident artists through Very Special Arts of Massachusetts, attend the annual performance of The Nutcracker at the Wang Center with students and their families, and offer limited student scholarships for instrumental music instruction through contacts with the arts community. On-site counseling services for students and families are available through our partnership with Franciscan Hospital for Children.
