The Winship school is a small, public elementary school located literally in the center of the Brighton, MA community. It is part of the Boston Public Schools. The school is housed in a beautiful Victorian-era structure steps uphill from Brighton Center and the Boston Public Library's Brighton Branch. There are approximately 270 students, from grades K0 to 5. Fifty percent of students come from the Allston-Brighton area, and the rest are from other parts of Boston, including East Boston, Roxbury, and the South End. Experienced staff and strong literacy and science programs are the backbone of the Winship School. An inquiry-based instructional approach is utilized by classroom teachers. Science is taught both by the science specialist and classroom teachers. All enjoy using the beautiful outdoor classroom as well as Chandler's Pond for extended learning. Our genre-based writing curriculum focuses on developing writing skills in science and each of the content areas. Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Winship will offer an Advanced Work Class for 4th grade students that focuses on math, reading, and writing. The Winship has a number of distinctive special classes that increase the educational breadth and wellness of our students. Fine art and dance are offered. The arts are enhanced through VSA Arts, who provide resident artists including African Drumming, Folk Songs, and Storytelling, and by Boston University's Making Music program, which provides free instrument lessons. To cultivate students' fitness, we offer a physical education class that utilizes the Oak Square YMCA's facilities throughout the winter; in addition, Playworks will provide structured recess activities to increase fitness and good sportsmanship. Finally, our library media class instructs students in research skills, information literacy, and technology. The Winship has several partnerships with local educational and health care institutions that provide support to students. Our school has a full-time on-site City Connects coordinator who links children and families to community resources. Students can receive on-site counseling from the Franciscan Children's Hospital. There are tutors from the Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy, ReadBoston, Boston College and Boston University. Before and after-school care is provided at the Winship by the Oak Square YMCA. The Winship has a dedicated, experienced staff that focuses on cultivating students' natural curiosity and inquisitiveness, particularly in science. Our specialists and community partnerships provide students with educational support and a uniquely broad-minded education. In short, we have a great little school.
