Welcome to the Winship Elementary School!

Winship SchoolThe Winship School is a small, publicly-funded, traditional elementary school located literally in the center of the Brighton community. It is housed in a recently-renovated Victorian-era structure steps uphill from Brighton Center and the Boston Public Library’s Brighton Branch.

The school has been designated a Science School - one of two in the Boston Public School system.  Science captures children's natural curiosity. Through science the children aren't taught to think, they learn to think.

“It's critical that we get students engaged in science at an early age.  That's when they're like a big sponge.  Even K1 and K2 students are at the ideal age,”  Ken Greenwood, science teacher.

The students are encouraged to learn through exploration and experimentation. Classroom teachers work closely with the Science Specialist to incorporate science themes into their lesson plans. The science classroom is where our Science Specialist can conduct experiments with the students.  The room has a variety of animals and is equipped with a mini-computer lab. Some students in grades 3, 4 and 5 are involved in science projects in which they produce a “technology of science” product to share at Science Night - an evening of demonstration the whole school and community enjoys.

Uniforms were adopted for 2006-2007 school year.

We also have a music teacher, an art teacher and a computer teacher. We hire resident artists through Very Special Arts of Massachusetts to supliment our arts programs.  There is before- and after-school care that is provided at the Winship by the Oak Square YMCA. A new K1 classroom (for 4-year-olds) was added in 2005-2006. The Allston-Brighton Family Network uses the Winship School for their play groups.

We hope to continue to close the achievement gap and get more families and the community involved in the education of our children," Mayor Thomas Menino.

The Winship has several partnerships with local educational and health care institutions that provide support to the students.  Boston Connects, staffed with a full-time on-site coordinator, links children and families to community resources, strengthening a  family’s support system.  We have educational tutors, onsite counseling from Franciscan Children’s Hospital, early childhood special education program, and a dedicated teaching staff. In short, we have a great little school.
